Energy production consumes amphibian habitat in Alberta and around the world. Turning your thermostat down 2ºC in the winter and up 2ºC in the summer makes a big energy-saving difference. Unplug your 'energy vampires' Appliances can draw power even when they're 'off', wasting up to 20% of our electricity. Climate change is linked to disease outbreaks that are driving many amphibians towards extinction, so unplug laptops and chargers when not in use. BYOB (Bring your own bag) Making plastic takes oil, energy and water, and produces toxins that can be harmful to wildlife - bring your own bag instead! BYOM (Bring your own mug) They spill less, keep your drink warmer, and save a lot of garbage! Plus many retailers offer discounts if you bring your own mug. Buy less stuff Ask yourself, do I really need a new one? Reducing what you buy also reduces the energy, water, and pollution it takes to make it. Buy one higher quality item that won't need replacing, instead of cheaper items that break more easily. Fly less Airplanes use even more fuel per person than private cars! Because planes use most of their fuel taking off, especially avoid short flights that are easily replaced by bus or train trips and flights with unnecessary connections. If you have to drive, don't idle your car Idling your car for more than 10 seconds uses more fuel than turning off and restarting the engine, unnecessarily polluting the habitat of amphibians and humans! Want to do more? Great! There are tonnes of websites that can help you help the planet. Searching for 'reduce my ecological footprint' or 'stop climate change' will give you some great places to start. http://www.climatecrisis.net/takeaction/ www.davidsuzuki.org/Take_Action/ http://www.davidsuzuki.org/NatureChallenge/ Click the frog to return to the Calgary Zoo Year of the Frog main page.
