Around the world

The schoolyard naturalization movement is represented in a variety of forms in countries across the globe and fits into the larger context of ‘school ground greening’.  In some cases, the focus is on the traditions of farming and agriculture, resulting in projects that include vegetable gardens and the raising of small farm animals.  Other countries focus on environmental sustainability, with schools embarking on projects such as living roofs and alternative energy sources.

The exploration of the worldwide context illustrates what can be achieved and may provide inspiration.  Your schoolboard and government officials may be comforted to know that the greening movement is legitimate and well-respected.  Programs in other countries may also provide you with examples of administrative structures – a way to gather information and ideas.

Across Canada

Schoolyard naturalization projects are found in every province in Canada and participation continues to grow as interest in the concept increases.  A number of local support organizations exist across the country.  Evergreen Canada is one of them. Located in Toronto, Ontario Evergreen Canada, is a strong national non-profit environmental organization with a mandate to bring nature to cities through naturalization projects. Their “Learning Grounds” program places Evergreen associates in many cities, and provides a variety of resources, from information on funding and curriculum connections, to working with volunteers.
