Brentwood Elementary School One of the oldest projects in Calgary at 13 plus years; well-established wooded area; many native plants; little hardscaping
Cayon Meadows Elementary School Worked with city of Calgary's Integrated Pest Management Dept. to create xeriscape plantings; installed 2003, 2004; extensive project across front of the school; amphitheatre, wood walking bridges, aspen grove, use of recycled tire path material
Dr. E. W. Coffin Elementary Fully engaged school; raised beds built several years ago; have adopted near-by natural area; amphitheatre and naturalized area installed 2004; included natural swales to collect rainwater and rescued plants
Glendale Elementary School well-established area (2002) with new native plantings (2004); includes composters, mosaic tiles, grass labyrinth, native shrubs, wildflowers and grasses
Olympic Heights School One of the oldest projects in Calgary installed 1995; well-established area in open front courtyard; amphitheatre; interpretive signage; demonstration garden for native wildflowers
Sunalta Elementary installed 2005; utilized existing plantings and added beds with native plants, benches, large amphitheatre combined with labyrinth; butterfly garden
Sunnyside Community School project installed 2000 through 2002; three distinct areas - prairie, riverside, aspen woodland; great use of logs, boulders; very organic, great for creative play
William Reid Elementary School Phases installed 2002, 2003; project stretches down side of school; pathways, small amphitheatre, mural on school wall, dry river bed, labyrinth, engraved rocks

As of 2002 the board placed a moratorium on any new naturalization projects. Three projects were installed after this date, as they had previously been given approval. Several schools have added small tree and shrub beds, but not of a significant scale.

 


Ecosystem Information

Name Description
Parkland A small area of Parkland exists around the Peace River area.  Vegetation includes trembling aspen and white spruce with balsam poplar in wetter areas. (Click here for details on the Parkland Ecoregion)
Grassland The remainder of the Calgary area lies in the Grassland natural region, specifically the Foothill Fescue subregion. This region is characterized by Mountain rough fescue-dominated communities which are found on average sites in remnant prairie areas, but most of the area is cultivated.  (Click here for details on the Grassland Ecoregion)
