Horticultural Therapy Certificate Program

We are pleased to announce that we will be running the first of four courses that make up a Certificate Program in Horticultural Therapy.  This program will be led by Shelagh Smith, HTR, MAEEC and will include local guest instructors and field trips.  The program has been accredited by the CHTA when it is delivered at Van Dusen Botanical Garden and is valued at 2 points towards professional registration as a horticultural therapist.

The Calgary Zoo submitted its own application for accreditation in early December 2011 for the courses listed below.  As of March 2012 the Calgary Zoo has not heard if the courses listed below have been accredited.

The courses are as follows:

Course 1: Introduction to Horticultural Therapy (HT) - October, 2012
Course 2: HT Professional Practice - March, 2013
Course 3: Garden Design and Plants for HT Programs - September, 2013
Course 4: HT Program Development - May, 2013

Each will be run over five consecutive days.  The intent is that all four courses would be offered within 12-18 months.  Each Course will include 25 hours of instruction over four days, plus one full day field trip.
