The Calgary Zoo is committed to providing a safe and healthy workplace for all of our workers, volunteers and visitors. Public health officials have confirmed that the H1N1 virus may be spread by coughing or sneezing by a person infected with the virus. People may also become infected by touching their mouth or nose after touching a surface with the flu virus on it. Best practices to avoid infection include frequent hand washing with soap and water and avoiding contact with infected persons.

In order to minimize the risk of infection to staff, volunteers and visitors the Calgary Zoo has:

•    installed hand sanitizer stations in a number of locations;

•    posted hand wash reminders/instructions in all washrooms;

•    asked all visitors, including children participating in school field trips, who may be infected with H1N1 to refrain from visiting the zoo for a period of at least 7 days after onset of symptoms as recommended by public health officials; and

•    implemented an H1N1 Influenza Sick Leave Policy for all employees, volunteers and contractors working at the Calgary Zoo.
