Africa

The Calgary Zoo's conservation efforts in Africa are a unique blend of community-based initiatives, funding, and hands-on action. We participate in two main projects on the African continent.

African Wild Dogs

Wild dogs, also called "painted dogs", are a species of canid with similar habits to our wild wolves here in Canada.

Ape Conservation Projects

Even though gorillas are the largest primates on Earth they are in trouble. The IUCN (International Union for the Conservation of Nature) classifies most great ape species as critically endangered and the situation for these amazing animals is unfortunately not generally improving. They face habitat loss, disease, poaching and even threats from civil unrest. We can work together to make a difference.
