Guyana Zoo

In May 1996, the concept of a Sister Zoo Program was officially approved by the Calgary Zoological Society's Board of Trustees. In 1997, Brian Keating visited the Georgetown Zoo and travelled into Guyana's back country to assess potential programs and partnerships. Two very successful Calgary Zoo sponsored eco-tour expeditions followed in 1998.

Project Overview

In 1999, Zoo staffer Donna Sheppard, (past Zoo Education volunteer, University of Calgary masters graduate in Anthropology), began a project with the Guyana Zoo. Over the next four years her list of accomplishments was remarkable, but more importantly, she has assisted the zoo in establishing itself as a reputable nature educational facility.

While in Guyana, Donna also developed a partnership between the Zoo and the International Iwokrama Rainforest Project, completing a "School Yard Ecology Project" to be implemented with the Guyana school course curriculum in the fall of 2004, with Calgary Zoo Funds. Iwokrama is a non-profit research and development institution established in Guyana to demonstrate how tropical forest biodiversity may be conserved, sustained and used for ecological, social and economic benefits.
